Superhero fatigue gets an interesting counter-programming test this weekend: Nicolas Cage steps into a shadowy new Spider-Man adjacent series while Apple TV+ spins off For All Mankind into Star City, a prequel set inside the secretive Soviet space program. Between Netflix, Hulu, Prime Video, HBO Max and the rest of the field, the streaming calendar is unusually deep for a single weekend.
Cage's project — a noir-tinged take on the shadowy corner of the Spider-Man multiverse — trades quips for cigarette smoke, moral compromise and rain-slicked streets, a tone that has early reviewers comparing it to the adult-oriented animation wave that proved superhero stories do not need to be bright to be good. The casting is half the story: Cage has voiced a Spider-Man character before, and the meta-layer is clearly part of the pitch.
Star City, meanwhile, extends Ronald D. Moore's alternate-history formula to its logical starting point. For All Mankind has always rewarded patience, and the spinoff arrives carrying the goodwill of a show that improved almost every season.
